PCL’s new design generates real smoke from combustible flammable material. Unlike PCL’s innovation, fire training simulators on the market today use artificial smoke. Experienced fire fighting professionals know that artificial smoke does not have the same characteristics as authentic smoke. For example, artificial smoke falls to the ground, resulting in improved conditions at eye level, which is not a realistic scenario. In an actual fire, smoke rises, making it difficult for fire fighters to fight the fire and rescue occupants. PCL’s system creates a live flame with a gas-fired burner helping provide trainees with a real fire experience and trainers the ability to control the fire.
Another feature of PCL’s real smoke fire simulator design is that it incorporates a thermal oxidiser to clean the smoke so it can be safely exhausted into the environment. The oxidiser helps eliminate visible smoke emissions and reduce environmental impact of the released air. Since PCL’s system recirculates smoke and heat, customers get the added benefit of energy savings.
In addition to providing real flames, real smoke and exhausted, clean air, PCL’s system can be designed to provide flashover effects, sound effects, stress heating, lighting effects and physical obstructions to better emulate an authentic fire emergency. With these features, training fire fighters with PCL’s real smoke fire simulator helps improve training effectiveness and provide better skilled trainees.
The PCL system consists of five components: two air lock chambers, a smoke generation compartment, a fire compartment, a smoke oxidising system and a control room. One air lock chamber is used for entry into the fire compartment, the other is for exit. The smoke generation compartment introduces smoke and fire into the fire compartment. Trainees fight the fire in the fire compartment. The smoke is cleaned and exhausted outdoors by the oxidising system.
The components of the PCL real smoke fire simulator can be easily controlled and viewed in the control room, which is complete with a viewing window to observe the training session. System designs range in style from single room, single story to multiple room, multi-story and can be used for training maritime, aviation, petrochemical, fire department personnel or other industry safety training centres in the private, government or military sectors.
